Answer to Question 3/30/09

Advertising affects/influences media every second of everyday. The different media outlets have different nitch markets that they cater to. In every article of Women's Health they have a section on of the latest fashion trends...they show you what is popular, how much it costs and where you can get it. What most readers don't know is that the "fashion police" at Women's Health don't pick out the outfits that are featured in the section. They dress the models according to the highest bidder. The fashion industry pays magazines to say that their products are popular in order to make them popular.

March 25 Gender Advertising

The article talked about how radical the women's feminist movement was and the way the femenists went about spreading their message. Some of the feminist's radical behavior gave them a "bad wrap". They were a group of women fighting for what they believed, and I admire that...but I think we should focus on equal rights for ALL, not just one specific group.

Demographics are what allows you to target your advertiser. "You're not going to try and sell Depends in a youth oriented magazine." -Doc.

If you're a free-lance writer you should check the demographics of that magazine and it could help you tailor your story to be of more interest to the magazine and its readers.

Men and Women Ad 1/26/09

How far is too far when analyzing advertisments?
Chapter 8 has got a list of things to look for when looking at an ad. Pgs 138-140 it talks about different ways of analyzing an ad. There is another one 154-155 in chapter 9 dealing with television ads. Not all of these questions will lead you everywhere with every ad and text that you see, but some of them will get you thinking. Some of them will get you beneath the surface of an ad, kind of into the sub-text...An ad or any other message has the text (the obvious message) and the sub-text (the part of it that appeals to your subconscience)...the blues and whites, the kind of cool and restrained colors that is a symbol for women...non of this happens by accident.

Whats the difference between an ad and a commerical? One is on the TV and one is in print form.
